Drill core library in Breiðdalsvík, and the IRDP-drill core

Open house in the Drill Core Library of the Institute of Natural History of Iceland (NÍ) on 19th May. The event was a collaboration project between NÍ and Breiðdalssetur.

The staff was presen: dr. Birgir Óskarsson geologist at NÍ, Martin Gasser, geologist at NÍ and Breiðdalssetur and Hrafnkell Hannesson as technician for NÍ.

Specially to be mentioned needs to be the IRDP-drill core (Iceland Research Drilling Project) that was drilled in 1978 in Reyðdarfjörður East Iceland. The core is 1919 m long and starts at 58 m above sea level. Therefore it reached to a depth of 1861 m below sea level.

The core was finally moved to its final destination Breiðdalsvík, 3 fjords south of Reyðarfjörður.
